Bunny Rabbit Always Gets the Carrots
My darling Eve,
Remember when the children watched ‘Captain Kangaroo, with Mr Moose, Mr Greenjeans, Bunny Rabbit and a host of other friends of the Captain? My favorite was Bunny Rabbit. He was a puppet character who wore horn-rimmed glasses, and he always tricked the Captain into giving him his carrots. Bunny Rabbit was a master at tricking Captain Kangaroo out of his carrots, getting Mr. Moose into all kinds of trouble and getting away with some mischief during the show. Though he was a hand puppet, Mr. Bunny Rabbit never said anything, but always made his point perfectly clear. He would stretch out his arms emphatically to communicate or bang himself down on the table to emphasize his gestures, which the Captain understood and explained for us. His purpose on the show appeared to be tricking the Captain into giving him those carrots always found in the big pockets on his coat. He was always dreaming up all sorts of schemes to get those carrots to the delight of all of us viewers. (parents and children) Then the captain would always scold bunny rabbit for eating so many carrots.
Upon reflection, I sometimes question if instead of being funny, the motives of Bunny Rabbit were more sinister than humorous. We are programmed at a young age to accept and laugh at actions that are wicked and evil at the core even in childrens’ programs. There’s big money in it. BIG MONEY. Is it any wonder that God must retrain, re-educate, re-indoctrinate and remake us into new creatures who hate all wickedness and anyone or anything that causes us to be unlike God our father. We were created in His image and we come to abhor not being like Him in all ways. In Jesus Christ we receive the indwelling of the Holy Spirit to teach and guide us in all ways holy, righteous and true. When I think about those qualities in my life that our God has patiently, meticulously and lovingly reworked (often to my great displeasure but to my betterment) my heart is overwhelmed with gratefulness and praise. Why does He love us so much? He has taught me that his love is overwhelming. We find comfort and peace in His nearness. His love always enables his children to draw nearer to Him. He is determined to deliver us from our sinful ways to remake us in newness of life that we might be all that he planned for us to be. As he draws us nearer to him, we are becoming more and more like him. Men won’t see it but the all-seeing eyes of our Lord watch as secret sins are consistently purged from concealed closets and shelves of our lives. His patience and tenderness is that of a mother teaching her children the issues of daily living. Oh how we love him! But He loves us more! And I love you, my darling Eve, because you love our God and put him first, that we might glorify him who gave us one to another. Praise to you, Most High God!
Learning to put aside the sin that so easily besets us, In Christ, Kochany
