Bad News from the East
Dear Eva,
In 1942, the Nazi occupation of Poland was in its third year and all Europe was at war with Germany and Itally or occupied by them. In every conquered country the totalitarian governments had robbed, murdered, raped and plundered the wealth of their captives. In western Poland, the boot heel of the Nazi gestapo, interrogated, intimidated, tortured and assassinated anyone hiding or helping a member of the Polish resistance underground army or a Jew. Adding to the misery and hopelessness of each day was an endless procession of terrible news from the western partition of Poland where the communist Russians were killing even more Poles than the Nazis. In April and May of 1940 the soviet communist Russians had murdered 22,000 Polish citizens. The victims were murdered in Katyn Forest in western Russia by the soviet secret police. About 8,000 were Polish army officers, there were 6,000 police officers and the rest were Polish intelligentsia, landowners, saboteurs, factory owners, lawyers, officials, university professors, teachers, engineers, chaplains, writers, journalists, pilots and priests. A post war investigation proved that Josef Stalin ordered the murders and in 1990 Mikhail Gorbachev admitted that the NKVD had executed the Poles and confirmed two other burial sites similar to the site at Katyn. When the Russians attacked on 17 September 1939, they arrested anyone who they considered a threat to resist the occupation. However they also began to evict the Poles from their homes creating Polish refugees in their own homeland. The secret police would come to each home and give the occupants five minutes to evacuate their home or be executed on the spot. Witnesses reported some homes where headless bodies were found in the wake of the Russian wave of terror, murder and plunder. The Polish war was waged on two fronts. Both enemies were devils, killing and brutalizing the strong the weak and the old without mercy in September 1939. Cannons to the east of them and cannons to the west of them, Polands allies and friends abandoned them. There was no word from the west. No hope for relief. The people were shocked and stunned. Confusion and turmoil seized upon the nation. The German secret police were masters of slow death but the Russian secret police were just as brutal and ungodly. The nation wondered why and how this could happen. Why did God allow this senseless massacre? Almighty God could have stopped it if His Christian and Jewish German people had risen up against the wickedness of the atheist German Nazi dictatorship. The bad news in the east resulted from the lack of action by the Christians and Jews in the west. There are severe consequences to Christian and Jewish cowardice. When the people of God refuse to stand during the rise of evil, wickedness expands to fill the vacuum of godly inaction and non-committment. Gods people are a vanguard of righteousness. The first failures, by the people of God, were in Germany and Russia where the Christians and Jews allowed wickedness and evil to dominate their country. The law of Moses and the Christian Bible proclaimed equal treatment under the law for Jews, Christians and aliens. The Second World War was an expansion of the black holes of evil to the west and east of Poland. The Nazi, communist and fascist doctrine was a handwriting of ordinances enacted to negate the Holy Word of a righteous God. It was a systematic, demonic effort to stamp out every visage of Christian and Jewish faith, values and commitment. It was during these times that a loving God brought Antoni and Antonina together. He brought them together to strengthen them and resurrect their faith in those Christian values which would gain them eternal life with the eternal Creator God who loved them and cherished their souls. Bad news prevailed and terrible events were all around them. But in the most hopeless of situations, the power of God reigns supreme. He is the God of deliverance! He is always standing in the shadows keeping watch over his own! He is the great protector! He protected Antoni and Antonina through the torment, terror and uncertainty of the Nazi police state. In the process He restored their faith and trust in Him and His ways. They lived in faith each day, trusting Him to get them through every new trial, torment or humiliation. They believed that God could save them and they prayed continuously, giving thanks for each threat they avoided. Their God was alive and able to save! He was greater than the occupying Nazis and communists. He delivered them and saved them from the destruction and devastation around them because He loved them and they trusted and looked to Him for their deliverance. Many blamed God for the evil of the invading hordes of hell, but Antoni and Antonina loved God and held out hope for deliverance from the evil all around them. Psalm 91: 14-16 states, “…14“Because he has loved Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him securely on high, because he has known My name.15“He will call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him. 16“With a long life I will satisfy him And let him see My salvation.” Antoni and Antonina loved God and He rescued them from an enemy that sought their lives. He was with them in trouble and he satisfied them with long lives. They showed us the Godly pattern of daily living which assures us of the blessing of our loving Heavenly Father. When we hear bad news from the west, east, north or south, let us remember Psalm 91 and the promise it gives to all the oppressed. God has been good to us, my darling Eva. We need him and He loves us. This is great comfort and blessing beyond description.
You are a blessing from God, May I always be a blessing from God to you, Kochany
