Food Was Better When We were Children
Eve, my listening wife,
Remember when our mothers would go out to the garden and pick fresh beans, tomatoes and cucumbers to prepare our meal? Often in summer when fresh vegetables grew, they would stand over a hot stove and prepare lunch and dinner without complaint. Dad appreciated the effort expended to cook the family meal and often expressed it. Sadly we children little realized the time and fore thought mom devoted to nourishing her family. Prepared foods were non existent in the ninteen forties and fifties. Wives were aghast at even the suggestion of setting a frozen dinner before family or guests. The women of those days set the norms for family and society, just as they do today. In those days before refrigerators, most homes had an ice box which would only keep milk and milk products 2 days. Those home makers demanded the freshest eggs, milk, fruits and vegetables because of the short time food could be preserved. One of the results of this limitation meant that the food set before us was better when we were children. Modern refrigeration and freezing capabilities enable man to extend the storage life of food. The written Word of God is like modern freezers and refrigerators in that it preserves for each generation the truths and concepts of the only true and eternal Living God. When we act on our knowledge and speak those teachings of the Most High God, we are breaking fresh bread which will nourish the heart, mind and soul of every listener who receives and applies the instruction to daily life. In this way the dead letter of the law is transformed to life. The Holy Spirit is a daily teacher as He reveals greater and greater truths and understanding as we are able to assimilate it in our lives. He never gives instruction before we are able to use it and bear the increased responsibillity we incur with greater knowledge. God perpetually sets fresh spiritual food before us to sustain life and nurture growth. Though food was better when we were children, God through the Holy Spirit provides sustenance straight from the Most High God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Let us always eat from the Words of Christ, the Vine of Life, Kochany
