The Reward of Our Labors
Eve, the honey in my life and the sweetest fragrance in my day,
Because you couldn’t take your vacation in early May, we had to reschedule our vacation for the busy Memorial Day holiday week-end. Instead of a 3 1/2 hour flight to Florida, we had a two day, 22 hour drive. The drive which might have been an unpleasant ordeal was actually fun. The dreaded long journey was filled with conversation and joyful bursts of laughter mingled with scenic views of mountains and peaceful valleys. We took along snack foods and sandwiches to reduce rest stops. You make the most tasty sandwiches. (Every man likes to eat from the hand of the woman he loves and trusts). We always had our main meals when I was driving and you prepared and served as we continued on our trip, speeding up our arrival time to Port Canaveral. We are careful to avoid fast food and junk food choosing instead healthy sustenance. Between meals, I pulled out, granola bars, fig newtons, peanut butter crackers, cherries, bananas, apples and oranges. You have always shared the driving duties with me but we have discovered the best formula is for me to drive early in the morning while you sleep (you’re not an early morning person). You begin to share the duties at mid-morning but after five PM you relenquish the wheel just long enough to have a short break and you’re ready to drive again until 11:00 PM if required. We arrived at our hotel at 4:00 PM the second day and spent some quality time on the beach before dinner and turning in for the evening. We were exhausted that night but our first two days of vacation reminded us of when we were younger and drove because we couldn’t afford to fly. We were just as happy then as we are now and it was good to reminesce in bed before drifting off in sleep. It doesn’t get any better than this; you and I together. Be it a 3 1/2 hr flight or a 22 hour drive it is my true love and myself, living, breathing and savoring our time together. The next day we would begin our cruise, the highlight of our trip, but there is something to be said for those times when we must choose a less desirable route, a more time consuming alternative and endure additional labor to attain our goal. This is not the first time we have changed or altered our plans but through it all it has always been, you and I together. Looking back on it all, I’m not sure that the cruise was the mountain top experience of our sojourn. It’s not what we did but who we did it with. It is always the Lord and us. That’s the top of the mountain! This we will cherish in memory, like the song which says, ‘I remember you, You’re the one who made my dreams come true’. The effort we have expended to be together will always be the reward of our labors. I’m grateful that our God gave us one to another.
May the love of our Lord Jesus be with us now and forever, Kochany
